Hello and welcome to this 22 session course. You can go at your own pace week by week. The aim is to help you to understand your depression, identify the thinking and behaviour patterns that keep it going, things you can do to confront your depression and practical problem solving. Once you have depression it often doesn’t go away but there are things you can do to learn how to manage it more effectively, including using activity as an antidepressant and getting your sleep pattern back on track.

Understanding Your Depression

Feeling depressed involves feeling down, lacking energy, feeling hopeless or losing interest or enjoyment in everyday things. You may have a poor appetite, wake early in the morning, having a low mood and feel anxious. You may be taking antidepressant medication which can alleviate some of the symptoms and you may want to do something yourself to help yourself. This session will help you assess and understand the nature of depression.

Solving Problems

You’ve made a next day plan and a part of that plan includes practical problems such as paying bills or writing letters. Setting an exact time that you are going to tackle them can help. So can a systematic way problem solving process, which is what we look at in the next session.

Take a look at the connection between your thoughts and your feelings and how the way you think about things affects the way you feel about things.

Take Care of Yourself

Often people find that when they’re feeling depressed that they neglect themselves more or they neglect their living environment. This can have a huge impact on how you feel. Download some positive steps you can do which may help you to regain control over taking care of yourself.

Preventing Relapse

This course might have taken you several months to work on and go through. You will have learnt techniques for life. Keep working on the techniques until you experience a lift in your mood. If you have put in a lot of effort and there is still no lift then please seek professional help. If you have experienced an improvement, you might want to continue to plan to prevent relapse.
